This was a fairly solid continuation of the story. Like before, the book gets a lot of mileage out of the initial series of introductions to the characters as we go back and forth to each of the individuals in the scenario. In brings a solid selection of people from the previous installments and some fun new characters trying to escape the pandemic around the country, focusing on several survivors who have snuck onboard the ship at the end of the previous entry, those stuck in the hospital, or the various citizens still in the city trying to get out of the city from the creatures. These introductions are usually done in conjunction with a nice bit of connection that continues the series of interactions and confrontations, expanding on the zombie threat from the previous films at the center of the film, all giving this a great storyline on its own while also providing some fun new elements.
What really helps this is yet another strong series of action scenes involving the zombies continuing to spread across the country. The interesting addition of putting the creatures onboard the cargo ship that the stragglers sneak onto the ship to escape what was happening on the mainland, a fun continuation of that storyline, to have some fun on the ship. The suspense of the situation at first, trying to make sense of the strange creaks, grains, and growls of the infected slowly taking over the ship before getting to the more intense when everything gets exposed leading to plenty of confrontations throughout here keeping the tradition of high-quality action and decent enough gore focusing on the intelligent zombies using their skills to trap and tack out victims. The other scenes here involving the encounters in the city are just as much fun, taking place within the city, and while these don’t manage the intensity or pacing that the other scenes do, but aren’t too damaging overall.
