Collection - Prepare the Coffin: Tales of the Macabre by Cassandra O’Sullivan Sachar

Life runs amok in Blackthorn, Pennsylvania, and residents are rarely safe from the hands—or claws—of nefarious forces. From tragic accidents to revenge slayings to supernatural encounters, trouble is always afoot.

Overall, this was a fantastic collection of stories with a lot to like. The inherent variety of the stories, with a wide-ranging variety in not just the topic and theme but also the general style presented in each one, helps it create a rather enjoyable energy, which is quite fun to see explored with the stories on display. Ranging from the inherently chilling to the more vengeful, as supernatural or human forces get together to dish out revenge on the unfortunate members who do something they shouldn’t and get attacked for it. These have a solid old-school vibe to their storytelling that meshes well with the modern format and themes of grief that haunt plenty of the stories in the collection. Given that they’re so brief and are so numerous in quantity that it’s a brisk, easy read as well, with it moving to a new one quickly, perhaps so quick that some might want to have a bit more to them so it doesn’t feel so fast, but there’s still quite a lot to enjoy with this collection.
