The police officers from the town of Clifton Falls thought the zombie virus was over, but when they investigate a strange occurrence at the cemetery, they discover twelve graves have been disturbed. After the mysterious fertilizer is investigated, an unknown chemical is found, and the scientist behind it is interviewed. The police learn that the chemical destroys the plant-eating bugs, but it also regenerates dead cells in humans for a limited time. As the night falls, the zombies rise from their graves to hunt the residents living in a nearby holiday village. But none of them could have predicted the terror that would be unleashed upon them.
This is a fairly fun continuation of the saga, picking up right where the original left off. Bringing in the results of the previous film at the very start by featuring the survivors at the hospital trying to come to terms with their wounds and injuries, as the disbelief and chaos run rampant throughout town, offers a fine way to bridge these entries. As it’s still fairly early on into the revelation that the outbreak has taken hold and the need to keep misinformation regarding the true nature of everything from the public, there’s some genuine intrigue here with not just these continuing characters but also the new characters that try to investigate what’s going on but get pulled further into the chaos. This gives everything a solid mix of new and original characters, with more residents of the town coming into contact with the zombies and investigating the events of the first one, providing some fun elements here mixing in the expanding outbreak in the town with the discovery of what happened previously as well as some wholly effective aspects to the zombies’ behavior with how there’s select individuals capable of remembering their past lives.
With everything going on here involving the returning characters looking to explore how the chemical spill is affecting people, the new characters coming across the events being depicted, and how the building connections are made with the different characters finally coming together towards the end, the book manages to offer up some solid action scenes here with the zombies appearing in numerous confrontations around town. Bringing up encounters in the chaotic hospital when infected individuals turn and go crazy, out in the local graveyard when they find the toxic chemical has brought them to life. Other scenes involving the local citizens trying to get to safety, there are some tense sequences here, with the action depicted being rather enjoyable overall, while also offering some fine gore. There are some issues with the scope and scale of the town, featuring too many characters to keep track of, especially with the storyline skipping around to various characters at different points throughout the night as events unfold, as well as some questionable humor. Still, it’s a niggling factor that doesn’t harm this overall.
