Cedar Mills by Dylan James

Seeking to understand the recent deaths and disappearances in their town, a disgraced homicide detective and a group of grieving high schoolers unwittingly join forces. But what this ragtag bunch of answer-seekers finds will not only force them into a fight to save themselves and their town, but all of humanity as we know it... Welcome to Cedar Mills.

Overall, this was a really likable story with plenty going for it. One of the most enjoyable features is the strong central setup that gives everything a rather intriguing setup. The whole idea of the series of strange events in the forest surrounding this small town, and a group of friends come together to look into what’s going on, which slowly drags them into this strange mystery involving a savage creature that’s been lurking around, creates an immensely strong starting point to introduce the rest of the characters into what’s going on. Getting into the action incredibly quickly and mixing its slew of characters from the school, especially when they meet up with the investigator trying to look into the various sightings depicted, alongside the tension of the situation as it builds up to the different reveals of what’s out in the woods of town, there’s some fun to be had with the setup at play here.

This ties nicely into the series of strong encounters and descriptions of the creature action throughout here. The brutal encounters are designed to showcase the different characters running into the woods and uncovering the slew of potential culprits that are investigated throughout here, shifting focus to the different characters so that there’s a different viewpoint and motivation to get everything solved. When it moves from a potential human threat to something more ominous and threatening when more information is revealed, it does so with a really nice touch, as everything being revealed in the manner it is spelled out here creates a lot to like. This highlights a slight issue with having too many narrators and causing this to feel way too cluttered as a biker gang, paranormal investigator, the troubled sheriff, and the investigative students create a few too many instances of whiplash trying to keep everything straight. Beyond that, there’s a lot of fun to be had with this.
